Here is some of Edmond’s history
Edmond has a great history. In 1887 Edmond started as The Santa Fe rail line in the Oklahoma Territory which was still Indian Territory. Edmond was used as a water and coaling station for steam engines at the time. The site for the station was chosen because it was the highest point on the line in Oklahoma County. That was important because trains could accelerate more easily going downhill while leaving the station in either direction. The railroad then named the station for Edmond Burdick, the Santa Fe’s traveling freight agent. Edmond became a town after the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889. Because the first settlers liked the name the railroad used, they decided to keep the name for the town.
Another neat fact is that Edmond is home to the first public schoolhouse in Oklahoma Territory which was completed in August 1889. It currently is a historic monument on 2nd Street between Boulevard and Broadway. The schoolhouse is open to the public on the first two Saturdays of each month or by appointment. Edmond is also home to University of Central Oklahoma. Their mascot is Buddy Bronco and UCO is the second oldest public institution in Oklahoma.
